FOOD & WINE

I have recently discovered Food & Wine’s tumblr blog, and, like Ulysses faced with the Sirens, I may need my crew to tie me to the mast before I clean out my bank account on a quest for ingredients. Lately I’ve been drawn to making multicolored meals, ranging from chopped salads to fruit empanadas. This beautiful salmon salad may be on the menu this evening when my HTB returns from his business trip.

HIGH

The heat wave has finally reached California, and it’s so hot that I’m not even thinking about refreshing drinks any more – I’m just trying to stay as still as possible until it passes. One thing that helps is piling my curly mop of hair on top of my head until nary a strand touches my neck, and then turning my back towards a fan. Heavenly.

COOL MINT

I know I’ve been talking about it for awhile, but tomorrow I really am going to have some people over for my birthday. Birthdays have always been important to me, involving a few weeks lead-up as well as another week of follow-up after the fact. It’s more like a birthMONTH, actually, and there are several requirements. Here are the five most important ones, in no particular order:

1. A big dinner.
2. A cake – or pie – with candles.
3. A commemorative gathering.
4. The ‘happy birthday’ song.
5. Presents (a six-pack of beer brought to the gathering will suffice).

Of late, I have also been really into creating signature cocktails for my birthday events, even if they only involve a handful of people. Tomorrow I will be serving vodka spritzers with mint from the garden, cucumber, and lime. It’s been so hot lately, I figured I would just take every summery, cooling thing I could think of and put them all in one drink. It will probably (hopefully) look something like this:

BEDSIDE

Pretty soon I’m going to have clay pots (of varying quality!) on every available surface in my little house. I just can’t stop throwing them. I may need to start an Etsy shop out of necessity rather than talent…

When I start getting a bit better at the whole ceramics thing, I’d love to create a little bedside tableau like this:

BEST BREAD

It’s the height of summertime (or feels like it, anyway), which means that all kinds of amazing fruits are either in – or about to be in – season. I’m already drowning in July’s cherries, and gearing up for August’s blueberries and concord grapes. I know that concord grapes aren’t for everyone, with their powerful, grape soda-like flavor, but I love them. The best bread I’ve ever made is Smitten Kitchen’s concord grape focaccia with rosemary – the rosemary really tones down the sweetness of the grapes, bringing out their full, almost perfume-like flavor. Highly recommended.

FRIDAY

I’m back from Palm Springs, refreshed and ready to take on the world. But first – the weekend! I hope you all have a wonderful one.
